A teenager was arrested in the case Shooting and attempted robbery San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Ricky Pearsall was indicted Saturday on attempted murder and other charges, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced Tuesday evening.

The 17-year-old from Tracy is charged with attempted murder, including charges of personal and intentional discharge of a firearm, assault with a semi-automatic firearm and attempted second-degree robbery.

Charges will be filed in juvenile court, Jenkins said, although police are continuing to investigate the case, including aspects of the teenager’s background, which could change the disposition of charges, resulting in the teenager’s case being transferred to adult court.

“What I mentioned in 2022 is that there are five types of offenses for 16- and 17-year-olds that we’re looking at potentially turning them over to adult court,” Jenkins said. “Attempted murder is one of those charges. And it was up for trial.”

The shooting of a 49ers rookie in San Francisco’s busiest shopping district made national news Saturday afternoon.

San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott said Persall, 23, was leaving Union Square around 3:30 p.m. local time when an armed suspect approached and attempted to rob him, prompting a physical altercation.

“A struggle ensued between Mr. Pearsall and the suspect and the suspect fired his gun, striking both Mr. Pearsall and the subject,” Scott said.

According to police, the suspect was arrested while trying to flee the scene. His name is not being released because he is a minor.

Persali’s mother said on social media that one bullet entered the right side of his chest and exited his back, missing vital organs.

Earlier Tuesday, 49ers general manager John Lynch said He was confident the team’s No. 1 draft pick would contribute at some point this seasonBut he will need time to recover, even though he is doing “remarkably well”.

“Ultimately I decided the best thing for Rick was some time. He’s going to need this time physically. He’s going to need this time emotionally, mentally, and we’ve made that decision,” Lynch said. “When we drafted Ricky, we did it for the long term and Ricky is going to be a fantastic player here.”

Lynch told reporters it was “by the grace of God” That Pearsall was back with the team less than 72 hours after the shooting.

“I could sit in the hospital and if I heard from one person that I heard from so many people from there, it was nothing short of a miracle that he came out of that situation as well as he did,” Lynch said. “On behalf of Ricky and his family, I spoke with Ricky this morning, he just wants to express and the team wants to express our gratitude to a variety of people, number one, the San Francisco Police Department. They were incredible in their response. They were incredible at the hospital.”

Jenkins said the teenager is expected to be arraigned Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the San Francisco Youth Leadership Center.

“At this time, because we are dealing with a juvenile, there is very little that I can share right now regarding the charges and how things will unfold,” the district attorney added.
